Robin Frijns took a shock podium in the Putrajaya ePrix for Andretti. It was quite the performance given the team are using Season One technology, and Frijns somehow managed to complete the final three laps of the race with broken rear suspension. Having started in 8th position, he slowly worked his way up the field, benefitting from the errors of those ahead of him.
“It was a really exciting race,” Frijns said, “The pace was actually really good. The energy in the first car was really good as well – we went one lap longer than everyone else. The second car had some temperature issues because it’s really warm here in Malaysia.
“Then I hit the wall. I was overtaking someone and got in the marbles and was just a passenger. Hit the wall and broke the suspension with three laps to go. But we managed to bring it home in P3. It was a big surprise – so glad we crossed the line!”
Andretti’s Co-Team Principal Roger Griffiths, said: “We’re extremely happy here. The way we went into this weekend we never really expected to be on the podium, but we never gave up the fight. Considering we are running a Season One powertrain against the might of some of these other teams – extremely pleased.
“Robin drove a phenomenal race. He’s really proving to use that he is a racer and many other people in the paddock are coming up saying that. He drove a smart race; he drove very intelligently. He listened to what we were telling him and adapted his driving style. Even after the brush with the wall in the end, he managed to bring it home. Extremely pleased and we just have to keep the momentum going.”
