The stewards have investigated the collision between Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo during the United States Grand Prix. Contact between the two of them, as Hulkenberg attempted to pass up the inside of turn 12, left the German with a broken front wing and damaged front suspension, causing him to retire. Ricciardo was also left with some minor damage which hindered the rest of his race, but he still managed to clinch a single point in 10th.
The stewards have decided that no penalty is necessary as a slow-motion replay highlights that Hulkenberg’s front wing had failed, which meant the German could not slow down in time.
“We were looking really good and I wanted to get past Daniel as I was faster than him and he was holding me up, so I tried to make a move," Hulkenberg said, “Unfortunately that didn't work and it was the end of my race.
"When I got back to the garage the team told me that there was an issue with the front wing – from contact earlier in the race – and it broke just when I was trying to make the move on Daniel. It's a shame as we could have scored a lot of points today.”
