2014 Moto2 World Championship vice-champion Mika Kallio is to become KTM's official test rider as the Austrian manufacturer gears up for its MotoGP return in 2017.
The Finn is no stranger to KTM, finishing second in the 2005 and 2006 125cc seasons with the manufacturer. He also finished third in the 2008 250cc World Championship.
Kallio has endured a tricky 2015 season, first with the Italtrans team before moving to the QMMF squad. This new role puts him in-line with a return to the premier class in 2017, as KTM will be keen to have Kallio put his know-how of the RC16 to good use in competition.
Kallio:
“KTM has played an important role in my career. When I first heard about their MotoGP 2017 plan, I realised that it might be a perfect chance for me to return to the Orange family. I am excited about our co-operation, since I respect KTM's know-how and way of working. I am eager to use my vast riding experience and analytic skills to an excellent job as their test rider. My heart is set on this project and, even though I will miss racing next year, I believe the best times are still ahead.”
