Marquez Throws Caution To The Wind In Last-Lap Thriller To Claim Fiftieth GP Win

Marc Marquez was in unstoppable form throughout the Australian Grand Prix weekend after topping practice and taking pole by nearly four tenths. FP4 also revealed a scorching race pace, with the Spaniard setting nine laps in the 1:29s – the only other rider close to that was Jorge Lorenzo, who'd managed just two 1:29s laps!

All of this pointed towards a dominant display from the Honda rider during the race. But a bad start saw him stuck behind the Ducati of Andrea Iannone and Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa. He got back by his compatriot at turn ten and began chasing Iannone.

The win looked like it was slipping away after several errors at turn one and an overheating front tyre allowed Lorenzo to break away and Iannone and Rossi to fight back. Entering the final lap in 3rd, Marc passed Iannone at the Souther Loop and got the hammer down, demolishing Lorenzo's eight tenths advantage.

Marquez got the run on Lorenzo through Lukey Heights and made a move on the Yamaha under braking for MG. He got his Honda stopped and picked the bike up as early as he dared to swoop through the final corner to snatch victory.

Marquez:

“It was a really fun race – certainly one to remember – and it had different phases to it. At the beginning there was a lot of overtaking, then when I passed Jorge it seemed that I was breaking away. However, I overheated the front tyre and had to slow my pace. At the end I overtook Iannone and Valentino and I had a great last lap; I don't know where I pulled that time from, but it was what made the difference for us! I want to thank all the teams, Honda and all the fans. After a difficult season it's always nice to finish the year with some victories!”
