Iannone Shines In Stunning Australian GP

Andrea Iannone was the star of the greatest show of the year after some incredible racing from the Italian saw him keep pace with the top guys and finish a mighty 3rd.

The 4.4km Phillip Island circuit was always going to suit the Ducati, primarily due to its lack of big braking zones as stability on the anchors has plighted the GP15 this year. The grunt of the bike and ability to go actually turn it, a debilitating issue of recent Desmosedicis, also gave them a good basis coming into the weekend to fight for the podium.

Iannone stole a tow from Jorge Lorenzo's Yamaha on his final flying lap and went second quickest, to Lorenzo's disgruntlement as both set identical lap times. The GP15 has always been quick off the start and proved that again by taking the lead into turn one. Losing the lead briefly at MG, Iannone blitzed Lorenzo down the straight and retook the position. An altercation with a seagull at MG on the following lap almost spelled disaster for the Italian, but he only lost one position as a result and gained it back on the Gardner Straight once again.

His pace to Lorenzo began to drop a little as the race wore on and his fight became for second. A beautifully bonkers mover on both Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi saw the Italian take second with just three laps to go. The Spaniard found his way past Iannone on the final lap, but he narrowly held Rossi at bay to take third.

Iannone:

It's and amazing fight, an amazing race! Incredible. My first race with a strong fight so I'm happy because I fought with the best riders in the MotoGP class with many titles. I try my best and I keep the podium! I'm happy for this but a great job from the team and we'll continued in this way step by step.”
