Spaniard Alex Rins dominated the Australian Grand Prix to record his second victory in his rookie Moto2 season.
Rins started the race from pole position ahead of Axel Pons but it was the latter who led into turn one. However, on the next lap race direction confirmed a ride through penalty for Pons for a jump start. The start by Pons didn't deter Rins who had an initial few laps of battling with Sam Lowes for the lead before remaining out front for the rest of the race. The result for Rins sees him move above Tito Rabat in the fight for runner-up in the championship. With Rabat not able to race this weekend or next at Sepang, Rins can secure runner-up spot at the Malaysian Grand Prix.
British rider Sam Lowes then endured a battled with Thomas Luthi for second and third positions before Luthi made an mistake into turn 10 on lap 17 and fell off his bike which gifted second to Lowes. Luthi did return to the race but could only finish in 15th. Lorenzo Baldassarri secured his first podium in his 50th Grand Prix start and it was an impressive display from the Italian who stormed past numerous riders in the race to finish third. More impressively was the fact Baldassarri only returned to the field last weekend at Motegi after recovering his mid-season injuries.
Baldassarri was battling with Folger in the closing laps and was holding a narrow advantage of half a second over the German until a flat rear tyre forced Folger to retire from the race with only four laps remaining. This allowed Takaaki Nakagami to finish fourth ahead of Xavier Simeon who had qualified only 17th on the grid with Luis Salom in sixth.
Newly crowned Moto2 Champion Johann Zarco had an unusual race with poor pace and only finished seventh in what was only the third event this season the Frenchman hasn't finished on the podium (after round one at Qatar and round 14 at Aragon). Mika Kallio finished eighth just ahead of Alex Marquez and Randy Krummenacher.
