Frenchman Johann Zarco has been crowned the Moto2 2015 World Champion this morning after the withdrawal of rival Tito Rabat.
The defending champion Rabat suffered an injury on Monday in a training crash and has not recovered in time to take part in the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend. Rabat attempted to take to the circuit in the first free practice but was soon deemed unfit to ride. The decision means that Zarco’s closest rival for the title is now unable to close the points gap and therefore Zarco wins the Moto2 championship.
Johann Zarco is the first Frenchman to win the intermediate class title since Olivier Jacque 15 years ago and is the most successful French rider in history. Apart from the season opening race in Qatar, Zarco has had a near faultless season with his first Moto2 win in Argentina and five further victories as part of 12 consecutive podiums from round two in Texas to San Marino in September. This dominant performance helped Zarco to extend his championship lead over the crucial mid-season and eventually clinch the title with four races to spare.
