Felipe Massa was fastest of the eight drivers that set a lap time in a wet afternoon session. Drivers were using the full wet tyres in the slippery conditions where the rain refused to hold off. Massa was ahead of Sebastian Vettel in 2nd and team mate Valtteri Bottas in 3rd.
Max Verstappen was 4th ahead of Fernando Alonso who has switched back to an older spec engine after testing an upgraded Honda power unit in FP1. The team said they were happy with the development but Alonso, with a 35-place grid penalty as a result, will start from the back of the grid, as will Roberto Merhi who has also picked up engine penalties.
Daniil Kvyat, Carlos Sainz and Jenson Button were the only other drivers to set a lap time.
With FP2 interrupted by rain and the morning session limited by the diesel spillage, teams will have a very busy Saturday morning sessions to cram in their qualifying simulations and race runs.
