Formula E Introduces a Full Course Yellow and New Penalty System

Formula E now has the ability to introduce a Full Course Yellow (FCY) period during a race. During the FCY the cars will be limited to 50kph and overtaking is strictly prohibited.

It is likely that the FCY will be followed by a Safety Car period if the cause of the issue still remains. Drivers must maintain the gap to the car ahead and must not drive erratically.

Season two will also see a new penalty system introduced; there are now four kinds of penalties which will be issued depending on how serious the incident is.

The penalty system is as follows:

Five-second time penalty: a driver must stop for five seconds at their pitstop; if the driver has already stopped, five seconds will be added to their race time.

10-second time penalty: the time penalty is added in the same way as the five-second stop, but is for a more serious incident.

Drive-through: the driver must drive through the pitlane without stopping.

10-second stop-go penalty: the driver must enter the pitlane and stop at their pit box for 10 seconds.

The new FCY regulation hasn’t met with full praise as Daniel Abt tweeted: “I'm not a fan of full course yellow. Safety Car bunches everyone up and creates action. FCY is just boring”
