Having been dropped to 13th on the grid after taking his post-race penalty in Singapore, Nico Hulkenberg made a strong recovery drive to exploit Force India’s potential in Suzuka.
“I had a great start, straightaway I got two-three positions off the line into turn 1,” he said, “I chose the inside. Inside of the Toro Rosso was risky but I knew I have to make it at the start because otherwise overtaking is so difficult here. Worked well, found myself in 8th position after turn 2 which was a great jump forward obviously.
“I had the Lotus in front of me, they were actually holding me up a little bit and we decided to undercut them with strategy, come in early, we just got them, it was really tight with Romain, but from then onwards we had better pace and I was managing my car, my tyres from then onwards.
“Pretty lonely most of the race from then, but it doesn’t matter, it was effective and successful.”
Hulkenberg finished 6th, scoring 8 points for the team.
