San Marino Grand Prix winner Enea Bastianini dominated Friday practice at the Aragon race track having topped both Moto3 sessions.
The 17-year-old Italian is second in the championship and 55 points behind leader Danny Kent but showed impressive pace on Friday that will have given him hope of closing the gap to his title rival. Bastianini set a lap time of 1m58.876 in ideal conditions for Moto3 to finish the day just 0.018s ahead of Red Bull KTM rider Miguel Oliveira even despite Bastianini suffering a late crash at the end of FP2.
Jorge Navarro, who missed the last round following a heavy practice crash, recovered well to be third overall and only one thousandth of a second slower than Oliveira. Fellow Spaniard Jorge Martin was fourth just ahead of Phillip Oettl. Championship leader Danny Kent ended the day sixth but was only 0.362s slower than title rival and admitted afterwards the team and himself know they need to study the practice data overnight to identify improvements to both bike and rider style in order to close the gap to the front.
Fabio Quartararo is missing the Aragon race this weekend as he continues to recover from injuries suffered at Misano, but his replacement this weekend Sena Yamada showed well by finishing a respectable 21st on the combined practice times. Similar to Moto2, the top 16 were covered by just one second.
