Formula E adopts Superpole for Season Two

Formula E has altered its qualifying format with the introduction of the Superpole; an additional session following the standard four sessions currently in place.
As we saw in season one, drivers will be placed into four groups of five which are decided by lottery. These sessions have been shortened to six minutes, giving the drivers time for only one 200kW lap after a warm up lap at 170kW.
The fastest driver from each session will then go out one by one for a Superpole shoot-out to determine the first five places on the grid, with 6th to 20th being determined by the fastest times from the qualifying groups. The pole-sitter will still receive 3 championship points as was the case in season one.
Formula E’s CEO Alejandro Agag had aimed to introduce the Superpole idea for this season.
“Pushing the car to the limit and brushing against the walls around a street circuit in qualifying is a real spectacle and one of the highlights of a Formula E event,” Agag said, “With this new qualifying format it will ensure the battle for pole position will go down to the wire - as the name suggests it’s super!”
