Loris Baz' future in MotoGP appeared cloudy past the San Marino race as Forward Racing struggle for finances to make the rest of the season. But the French rookie's weekend to took a bright turn when rumours of a move to Avintia for next season gathered momentum.
Clearly buoyed by this news, Baz took the best result of his début season after a stunning ride to 4th. The Frenchman judged the conditions perfectly, pitting for wets at the right time and doing the same for his dry bike. With seven laps to go he found himself in 3rd and looking at a potential podium. A substantially quicker Scott Redding denied him that, but Baz had well over fifteen seconds to the chasing Valentino Rossi in 5th and sailed home to take the lead in the open standings by five points.
“What a day! Without notice we had to race on wet conditions and change the bike not only once but twice. It was hard to stay on the bike with the slick tyres, but I think I was doing well there. Then I was one of the first to come back to pit to change to rain and after six laps one of the first to change again to slick. That was what made the difference. The race was crazy at some point I did not know where I was, I just stayed focused. The dry line was really tight. The last lap was eternally long because I wanted to bring the bike home and now I'm the leader of the Open standings. I want to thank all the team because flag-to-flag races are never easy and everyone did an incredible job not only for today but in the last couple of months.”
