Moto2 championship leader Johann Zarco took pole position for the San Marino Grand Prix by just two thousandths of a second from Alex Rins.

Zarco, on course to be the first French middle class champion since Olivier Jacque in 2000, snatched pole position from Spaniard Rins in the dying minutes of the qualifying session and take his sixth pole position of the season. The lap time of 1m36.754s was almost one second quicker than the previous lap record set by Pol Espargaro in 2013. Reigning Moto2 champion Tito Rabat qualified third to complete the front row.

Simone Corsi finished the session in fourth place just ahead of Dominique Aegerter and Hafizh Syahrin. The Malaysian rider produced the best qualifying performance of his career so far to line up sixth on the grid for the San Marino Grand Prix. British rider Sam Lowes qualified at the front of the third row alongside Takaaki Nakagami and Jonas Folger.

Meanwhile, there was an unusual incident in the qualifying session where Xavi Vierge came off his bike on the exit of turn 7 and his bike veered across the track twice and narrowly avoided other riders before hitting the barriers. Additionally, Axel Pons suffered his third crash on Saturday when he crashed at turn 10 during qualifying but will start Sunday's race from 14th position.
