Rabat Sets Record Pace at Misano

Moto2 World Champion Tito Rabat lapped the San Marino circuit in the fastest ever time for the intermediate category.

The Spaniard beat the previous record set by Pol Espargaro in 2013 with a 1m37.457s lap in the second practice session. Even more astonishing was the consistency of Rabat's run in the session with consecutive laps beneath Espargaro's record to demonstrate his superior pace to the rest of the field.

Dominique Aegerter finished the day an impressive second fastest just over a tenth slower than Rabat with Lorenzo Baldassarri just one thousandth of a second further behind in third. The top 17 riders of the Moto2 field were covered by one second which has become quite common this season in Friday practice but often qualifying has seen a further increase in pace at the front. British rider Sam Lowes suffered a crash in the first practice session but finished a respectable fourth in the afternoon with Alex Rins in fifth.

Simone Corsi had set the pace in the opening session but ended the day in sixth after only improving by one tenth of a second in FP2 and only just ahead of championship leader Johann Zarco who crashed out at turn 3 and unable to rejoin the session.
