Greater Power Punch for Season Two

The FIA has announced that Formula E will have an increase of power in season two from 150kwh to 170kw during race conditions.

The surge in power comes from a number of tests carried out in pre-season testing by the sports’ battery supplier Williams Advanced Engineering.

This is the second time that a power increase has occurred. The original specification was for a power output of 133kw which was increased to 150kw. The practice and qualifying maximum of 200kw will remain.

Alejandro Agag, Formula E CEO believes that the power increase is a step in the right direction to showcase the sports’ development of electric vehicles.

“The development of future battery technologies is fundamental to the ethos of the championship,” said Agag. “Formula E is all about showcasing the progression of electric vehicle technology and thanks to the battery development from Williams Advanced Engineering we will see faster, more efficient and exciting racing this coming season.”

Craig Wilson, the managing director of Williams Advanced Engineering confirmed that the firm had to make some changes to the current power pack.

“During season two the batteries will now be operating at 30 per cent more power than they were initially designed for and we have upgraded certain components and worked closely with the teams to make sure that this is sustainable without significantly affecting reliability.”

It is widely believed that the series aims to introduce a new series battery for season three, and open up the regulations to allow the teams to develop their own power packs thereafter.
