Nico Hulkenberg ran out of fuel in the final part of qualifying confirmed Force India to Autosport magazine.
The German had made it through to the top ten shoot off, but stopped at the entry to the pit lane at the end of his first run. With the team and marshals pushing him down the pitlane with minutes of the session remaining, he didn’t make it out for a second run, which cemented him to his first run time, leaving him 9th.
“It was a fuel miscalculation; that was all,” confirmed Deputy Team Principal Bob Fernley.
Explaining why they couldn’t rejoin the circuit after they got the car back to the garage, the fuel system was too hot for them to continue,
“It was a mess and we couldn’t re-start the engine because we had run dry, and the fuel pumps are hot,” Hulkenberg said.
“It needs time to cool down to get it back in, and we didn’t have much time obviously.”
Force India start 8th and 9th.
