Mercedes have confirmed that Nico Rosberg’s engine change yesterday was due to a coolant leak which contaminated the engine.
The Championship leading team brought a large engine upgrade to the biggest power track of the year at Monza, and fears were raised after the engine problem on Saturday morning. Rosberg was forced to switch to an engine which has already been used in six grand prix, with Hamilton continuing on with the new upgraded package.
Mercedes confirmed on Sunday morning that the part which failed on Rosberg’s new engine wasn’t related to the upgrade, dampening fears that Lewis Hamilton would also have a similar problem.
There is no news yet if the engine will be able to race again from the team.
Rosberg starts a compromised forth behind his team mate and the two Ferrari’s, who had also used tokens for the Italian Grand Prix weekend.
Customer Mercedes teams didn’t have the upgrade this weekend, so are now out of sync with the works team, but still managed to get all but one of the cars into the top ten in qualifying.
