Montreal mayor Denis Coderre has confirmed that the city of Montreal has paid a registration fee to Formula E Holdings and launched a formal bid to the FIA in Paris to host its own Formula E race.
The fee, reported to be $150,000, was paid to the series promoters Formula E Holdings as city officials have met with the organisation in London recently.
Montreal could be the opening race of the 2016 / 17 season as the city targets an autumn race. This would tally with the city’s 375th anniversary celebrations.
It is not known for certain where the event will be held, but likely contenders are reported to be a specially designed circuit around the Olympic stadium, or the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Speaking to Motorsport.com, Coderre said: “As part of our concept of electrification, we believe that Formula E is an important event in Montreal.
“It will prove that Montreal is a green city and a county seat in the world of international events.”
