British rider Sam Lowes took a sensational pole position at Silverstone for the Moto2 British Grand Prix with a late lap and new pole record time of 2m06.345s.
It wasn't an incident free session for the Brit as his bike grinded to a halt at Stowe when he ran out of fuel with just 14 minutes of the session remaining. Lowes managed to wheel the bike back to the pits in time for one final run and on his very last lap stole pole position from practice pacesetter Alex Rins by 0.058s. Championship leader completed the third row just 0.016s further back.
Moto2 defending champion Tito Rabat qualified fourth but on his final lap suffered a cruel high side at The Loop and was stretchered away from the track by the marshalls as he appeared to be in quite some pain. Dominique Aegerter was unfortunately caught up in the incident as his front wheel clipped the bike of Rabat but he managed to escape unhurt.
Switzerland's Thomas Luthi will line up in fifth place just ahead of Takaaki Nakagami on the second row. Folger qualified a respectable seventh with an impressive Lorenzo Baldassarri taking eighth place. Spaniard Alex Marquez was second in final practice but unable to repeat the performance in qualifying and will start the race from ninth just in front of Sandro Cortese.
The Moto2 race is the first on the schedule tomorrow as usual for the British Grand Prix to assist with European broadcasters. The race gets underway at 11:20 UK time and live commentary will be on our twitter feed @ILMMotoGP.
