Home favourite Sam Lowes finished quickest after Friday practice for the Moto2 British Grand Prix on Sunday.

The rider from Lincolnshire had already impressed with a very hard fought second place in first practice where he was edged off the top of the leaderboard by Johann Zarco by 0.016s. However, in the second session Lowes went one place better by ending the day fastest of all with a lap time of 2m08.004s.

Alex Rins was just under a tenth adrift of Lowes after gradually improving lap after lap throughout the session to eventually remove Tito Rabat's name from the top of the timesheets. Rabat eventually had to settle for fourth behind Takaaki Nakagami. Alex Marquez finished an impressive fifth ahead of Jonas Folger and the top five were very close indeed covered by just a quarter of a second.

Behind these riders, Cortese ended the session seventh, Syahrin eighth, Luthi ninth and Krummenacher tenth. Meanwhile, championship leader Johann Zarco had a session to forget. The Frenchman, having topped first practice, initially went out on wets to "scrub in" a set in case of mixed conditions in qualifying. He then returned to the track with slicks and slowly made his way into the top ten before crashing at the high-speed left-hander of Chapel. Zarco suffered no injuries but his bike was sufficiently damaged to cause him to miss the rest of the session and finish a lowly 15th but still within one second of Sam Lowes.
