Lorenzo Takes Back Four Crucial Points In Championship Fight

Jorge Lorenzo entered the second half of the 2015 season 13 points behind championship leader and Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi after finishing a distant 4th in Germany.

So the Spaniard knew he had to strike back quickly, especially at a circuit that does not particularly suit the Italian.

Lorenzo had dragged a front row start out of a tricky qualifying session, and this set him up nicely to have a run at Marquez into the first corner at the start. As the pack thundered towards turn one, Lorenzo did just that. He and the Honda began to break away from the rest of the field and the battle for the win commenced.

The Movistar Yamaha rider held sway for much of the 26-lap contest, but Marquez overhauled him into the first turn on lap 24. Marquez then bolted and Lorenzo was left to consolidate 2nd.

At one point it was looking as if Lorenzo was going to close the gap to his team-mate to just one point. Nevertheless, he has managed to claw back four points on Rossi and reduces the gap to just nine points heading to the Czech Republic.

“It could have been worse and it could have been better”, stated Lorenzo post-race. “Second place in MotoGP is always a very good result because these are the best riders in the world, so to fight for the win and lead for so many laps during the race is difficult. I pushed a lot from the start in every corner and I probably lost more energy than Marc, who was following me. When he attacked I really didn't have enough energy and I wasn't fresh enough to make an attack on him, so I recovered four points on Vale and lost five to Marc, but he's still quite far behind in the championship. I think we should celebrate this result after a difficult weekend and my crash this morning. I am satisfied, let's see what happen in the next race.”

Incidentally, the crash Lorenzo is referring to (which occurred in morning warm-up) was the first this season for the Spaniard.
