One of the ‘historic’ races looks set to stay on the F1 calendar with Italian politicians confident a deal will be reached shortly with Bernie Ecclestone.

Doubts have been cast over the last few months of the viability of hosting the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, one of the sports most precious races along with Monaco, Silverstone and Spa. It was even reported that Imola were looking to take over hosting the race in case money wasn’t forthcoming.

Talking to the Italian publication Gazzetta della Sport the governor of the Lombardy region Roberto Maroni was positive about the situation, “Finally. After many attempts, we now have the possibility of a real prospect for the entry of the Lombardy Region in the Monza Park, along with the cities of Milan and Monza.”

“With an investment tax free, we can close the deal with Ecclestone”, to save the Monza Grand Prix, “by early September,” to coincide with the holding of the Grand Prix Monza.”

“Already the day after tomorrow I will meet Andrea Dall’Orto, the president of Sias the company that manages the Monza circuit, to close the deal with the mayors of Milan and Monza by the end of August, because the GP has to stay in Monza, because Monza is Monza,” said Maroni.
