BMW put off by mid-race car swapping

Official course vehicle supplier to Formula E, BMW says that the current car swapping rule in the sport deters it from joining the series.

The current rules stipulate that drivers must make a mandatory pitstop to change cars during the race. Today’s current level of technology isn’t sufficient to ensure that cars can race at full speed for the full hour long race.

BMW Motorsport chief Jens Marquardt said removal of the car change rule “would be a condition for our potential direct involvement”

“An issue that needs to be addressed is the change of car, if you look at public discussions of electric mobility, the issue of reach is very important.”

FIA president Jean Todt hopes to bring forward the issue of car changes as Formula E’s future direction looks to end this in season five.

The 2015/16 season team names were announced earlier which sees Renault and Citroen DS become the only major car manufacturers to join Formula E in season two.
