The FIA has confirmed that the deadline for those teams applying to join the F1 grid for either 2016 or 2017 has been extended.
Motorsport’s governing body revealed in May that it was opening a tender for a new team to join the ranks, with the submission of expressions of interest due by 30th June. However, Motorsport.com has reported that this deadline has now been pushed back to 23rd July.
The FIA has not provided a reason for the delay, although some sources have suggested that it could be due to additional applications from candidates that represent a serious but as yet unsubmitted bid for inclusion. Of course, such a delay makes it even less likely that another team will join the grid as soon as next year.
The FIA has reiterated that it expects to announce which team, if any, is selected on 30th September.
