Mika Kallio surprised the paddock with the fastest time of the second free practice session for the Moto2 Grand Prix of Germany. The Finnish rider went to the top in the final six-minutes of the session with a lap of 1:25.069. He has severely lacked the form we are accustomed to seeing from the Italtrans rider so far this year but this weekend could be a turnaround.

Dominique Aegerter is something of a Sachsenring specialist having take his only Grand Prix win to date in the class at this race last year. He ended the second free practice session 2nd fastest with a 1:25.097. German favourite Jonas Folger completed the top three.

Sandro Cortese threw his hat into the ring in the battle for top German having set the 4th fastest time of the afternoon in the closing seconds of the session. The Dynavolt Intact GP rider was just four-hundredths slower than Folger. Sam Lowes had topped the session but fell to 5th by the chequered flag. He won't be too distressed however as he looks to have a good pace around the 2.28-mile circuit.

Takaaki Nakagami impressed in FP1 and proved that his pace from this morning was no fluke after setting the 6th quickest time of FP2. The Japanese rider desperately needs a result this weekend, and doing it before the summer break would be huge confidence booster.

Randy Krummenacher made everyone sit and take notice in 7th having set the fastest time briefly earlier in the session. Johann Zarco, Tom Luthi and Xavier Simeon completed the top ten.

The session was red-flagged with seven-minutes left on the clock when Azlan Shah crashed coming out of turn eleven. Shah walked away unscathed but the bike was left in the middle of the circuit depositing fluid, so race direction had no choice but to suspend the session whilst it was cleared. The session got going again and it caught Tito Rabat on the back foot. The Spaniard had already had a crash earlier in the session at turn eight, so had missed out on some running. He ended the session in 13th.

Alex Rins also crashed at turn eight just seconds after Rabat. Julian Simon and Sam Lowes also took to the Sachsenring gravel over the course of the session.
