Rio Haryanto wins the second race of the weekend in Silverstone from pole position and was joined on the podium by Raffaele Marciello and Pierre Gasly on P2 and P3.
Following the collision in the last corner of yesterday’s Feature Race, Arthur Pic (Campos Racing) was handed a - to a 20 second time penalty converted - drive through penalty, as the Frenchman was found guilty for the contact causing Jordan King’s (Racing Engineering) retirement. Despite having finished the race on 6th position, Pic got classified 14th in Race 1.
The stewards also penalised GP2 rookie Oliver Rowland, judging the Briton for leaving the track at turn 9 too often during the race. A 5 second time penalty let Rowland drop down in the classification from P8 to P10.
Reverse grid pole went to Campos Racing’s Rio Haryanto, being classified 8th in yesterday’s race. Alongside the Indonesian Nick Yelloly (Hilmer Motorsport) started the Sprint Race from the first row while Raffaele Marciello (Trident), Alex Lynn and his teammate Pierre Gasly (DAMS), Stoffel Vandoorne (ART Grand Prix), Alexander Rossi (Racing Engineering) and the winner of Race 1 Sergey Sirotkin (Rapax) completed the top 8 of the starting grid.
A solid start made Haryanto hold his first position while Yelloly dropped down to P5. Marciello and Gasly immediately came up to their final positions taking advantage of the rookies’ slow start. In the second lap of the race Sergio Canamasas (Lazarus) spun leading to a contact with Norman Nato (Arden International) and front wing damage for the Frenchman. This incident will be investigated after the race.
After just three laps of racing Rossi already came up to 4th position after having started 7th. Making his move on Lynn for P4 though, the American left the track overtaking the DAMS driver on the outside of Copse. Following an immediate investigation by the stewards, Rossi was handed a 5 second time penalty.
A stunning performance from Jordan King (Racing Engineering) having started the race 22nd after yesterday’s guilt-free DNF offered the viewers some great race action as the Briton stormed through the field. Already in lap 9 King battled with Johnny Cecotto (Carlin) for P11 - and won the position. The Racing Engineering driver finished the race on P10.
Having a higher pace than the DAMS driver, Yelloly attempted to overtake Lynn on P5 several times. In lap 17 though Sirotkin, who closed up to the battling drivers, took advantage of an unsuccessful move by Yelloly and overtook the Hilmer driver for P6, almost making a double with also catching Lynn. Struggling for pace but defending his position well, Lynn hold up the fighting group for P5. When GP2 rookie and Formula Renault 3.5 Series leader Rowland overtook GP2 championship leader Vandoorne for P8, he quickly closed the gap and joined the group of Lynn, Yelloly and Sirotkin battling for fifth position.
In lap 20/21 Yelloly took back P6 from Sirotkin before finally catching Lynn one lap later, finishing the race 5th. Saturday’s race winner Sirotkin lost his 7th position to Rowland in the very last lap and finished 8th, while Lynn managed to hold P6.
At the front Haryanto brought home the win with a 1.9 second gap over Marciello with Gasly crossing the finish line another 3 seconds later. Despite his time penalty Rossi got classified 4th.
For the first time of the year Stoffel Vandoorne did not score points in a GP2 race, finishing the Sprint Race on P9.
