Imola is looking to return to Formula One in 2017 in a bid to retain the Italian Grand Prix on the calendar.

It has been suggested by Bernie Ecclestone that the current venue at Monza, with its contract due to expire next season, isn’t safe from being dropped off the calendar. Imola last hosted an F1 race in 2006 and has been redeveloped since.

Talking to motorsport.com, the towns mayor Daniele Manca said, “We wanted to show Ecclestone how willing Imola was to get Formula 1 back – but also do our part to keep the grand prix in Italy.

“We presented our plan to relaunch the circuit, outline the investments we have made and what we plan to do in the coming years with our infrastructure.”

Questions remain over the financial viability of retaining the grand prix, but a share between Imola and Monza could be possible.
