Canadian Grand Prix Preview

We go to the Canadian Grand Prix in the same way we did in 2014, with a cloud appearing over Mercedes although this time it was something the team had done rather than the drivers.
The actions the team took at Monaco showed weakness in the team at a time Lewis Hamilton was dominating the weekend, which was handed to Nico Rosberg. Although Hamilton had to be persuaded onto the podium, there wasn’t bad blood between the two this year, even though the points gap has narrowed to just 10 points going into the Montreal weekend.
It was a disappointing weekend for Williams whose car clearly didn’t like the streets of Monaco, although times should be better in Montreal and the round after in Austria. The higher speed nature should propel them back to the top of the leader board, and could even challenge Ferrari now they are not bringing their new engine upgrades to Canada.
Ferrari clearly won’t be holding back though, given the improvements they have made over the winter they should be at the front of the field as well.
That can’t be said though for the Renault powered teams, along with Honda who clearly have a performance gap to Mercedes and Ferrari. That could help of the midfield teams get points this weekend. It would be a good opportunity for Lotus, who have a Williams-esque slippery car this year and Canada should be a good track for them, along with Sauber and Force India who are all looking to perform. Although Romain Grosjean has shown glimpses of speed this season, the team has really under delivered on their performance with accident prone Pastor Maldonado so far failing to score a single point.
Montreal is one of those highlights of the season, popular with all, with the based on the Ill de Notre Dame in downtown Montreal. On a track that is little used in park land it often provides interesting a different racing, and saw the introduction of more degrading tyres after an exciting race in 2009 prompted a rules rethink. The long straight and tight corners of chicanes or hairpins make it one of the fastest on the F1 calendar.
