Niccolo Antonelli set the fastest time of the day after topping the second Moto3 free practice session at Mugello. The Ongetta-Rivacold Honda rider utilised the tow of Alexis Masbou and Jakub Kornfeil to cross the line with a 1:57.616 right at the drop of the flag. The Italian was 3rd quickest in FP1, cementing his intentions of a front row start for Sunday's 21-lap Grand Prix.
Efren Vazquez was 11th after FP1, but improved substantially in the afternoon in 2nd spot. The Spaniard posted a 1:58.201, with Isaac Vinales completing the top three.
Miguel Oliveira was the first rider to break through Enea Bastianini's 1:58.247 from the morning session with a 1:58.236. He failed to improve on that in the closing minutes and fell to 4th. Romano Fenati continues to look strong in 5th.
Danny Kent soldiered around the 15-turn circuit situated in the Tuscan hills in clear air, posting decent laps but none good enough for top spot, proving that the slipstream is crucial to a flying lap at Mugello. The Briton was 6th quickest.
Andrea Locatelli will be looking for a strong result at home, and is on the right track to do that after crossing the line 7th quickest. Bastianini, Alessandro Tonucci and Kare Hanika completed the top ten.
John McPhee languished towards the back of the field in FP1. FP2 was a somewhat happier affair for the Oban-born Scotsman on the Saxoprint-RTG Honda. McPhee was 11th, but still 1.2-seconds down on top spot.
Fabio Quartararo continues his education of the Mugello Circuit and was 14th in FP2 after finishing 22nd in the first session. Philipp Oettl completed the top fifteen.
Niklas Ajo crashed late in the session. The Finnish rider lost the front of his RBA bike at turn three and slid between his two team-mates. He was okay. Darryn Binder crashed coming out of the final corner and was also unhurt.
