Williams driver Felipe Massa has said that Max Verstappen deserves his penalty for the crash with Romain Grosjean.

The Toro Rosso driver hit the rear of the Lotus while under braking for Sainte Devote on what were at the time much newer tyres, with the Dutchman all over the back of Grosjean’s car for the previous lap looking as if he was close to overtaking.

He got a five place grid penalty from the stewards to be taken at the Canadian Grand Prix in two weeks time, along with two points on his licence.

Massa commented about the accident, although not involved in the accident, “I would say what for me was pretty dangerous was the accident with Verstappen.

“He’s supposed to get a penalty for what he did. He braked behind, much later and what happened was very dangerous.

“It shows maybe that experience counts in Formula 1 and I think to teach about this type of accident, they need to control better because it was very dangerous.

“He is lucky he was not hurt. He could have been very hurt after what happened.”

It was the first visit for Verstappen at Monaco, with what was a very positive start to the weekend finishing second in the First Free Practice session on Thursday.
